“A HISTORY OF LONDON TRANSPORT COUNTRY BUSES FROM THE 1950s to 1970”

Hardback edition

by Sean Keating

This volume chronicles the history and development of the London Transport country bus operation and its Green Line counterpart from its apogee in the mid 1950s to its gradual decline and operational transfer to the National Bus Company in 1970. A full explanation for this fluctuation in fortunes and LT's response to it is discussed in the text.

The book also contains route descriptions on a geographical basis as well as details of route frequencies and adaptations to the fleet to deal with changing demand and patterns of travel. Increasing labour shortages and union demands also played their part in how the service was operated.

As ever, the quality of the book is well up to Capital Transport's usual high standard. Printed on glossy paper with numerous illustrations of vehicles (some in colour), statistics, a route map and relevant posters; a book to grace any coffee table!!

This is an essential read for anyone like me who laments the demise of the LT Lincoln Green bus fleet traversing the Home Counties countryside, and is a worthy accompaniment to Laurie Akehurst's Country Bus trilogy.

Last but by no means least, may I be allowed to pay homage to the author Mr Aves, whose depth of knowledge, appreciation and understanding of the subject matter is simply awesome.
