First published by Roundoak in 1988 and within two years out of print, this stylish classic by Peter Davies is now available after being 12 years out of print. In the book, Peter firstly recounts - in general terms - the evolution of the British lorry in the postwar era recalling vehicle makes, types, configurations and engine options plus the regulations prevailing during the decade. He then takes the reader on a countrywide journey, in each of the geographical chapters firstly appraising an area's transport operations and activities, then illustrating it with classic working images of the vehicles of many of that region's operators of the day.

These words and pictures - the book's black and white photographs being interspersed with colour images throughout - compose a nostalgic picture of general road haulage of the time; classic British lorries at work in their natural environment (no bulled-up restored examples posed on grass here) in the livery of famous and well-known road haulage operators of the day.

The list of operators featured reads like a who's who of 1960s road haulage. Although it is sad that very many of those featured are no longer in existence they are at least brought back to life in the pages of this book thanks to the author's splendid achievement of capturing them on film during their working life.128p. 43 colour, 152 b&w illustrations.
